history

Liberty Center flourished in the late-19th century and became the second incorporated village in Henry County. The Wabash Railway was constructed in the 1850s. At its peak, the railroad spanned over 3,500 miles with connections across Midwestern states and the providence of Ontario. Calvin C. Young, an early settler of Liberty Center, built the town’s first train depot and allowed the Wabash Railway to use the depot for free. A replacement depot was built in the 1890s and remained open until 1965. This landmark has since been preserved by the Liberty Center Historical Society and moved to Wabash Street.

The abandoned railroads have been converted into the Wabash Cannonball Trail, a 66-mile multi-use recreational trail. The South Fork runs from Maumee to the edge of Liberty Center, passing through Whitehouse and the Maumee State Forest with a connection to Blue Creek Metropark.
